The bind, stated plainly
Arthritic joints need movement — for cartilage nutrition, for maintaining range, for the surrounding muscles not to waste away. But the movements that hurt are the ones people avoid, and avoidance steadily shrinks what is available. Especially in osteoarthritis, reduced and painful movement is well documented, and getting people moving again is a genuine clinical problem.
How the method addresses it
It starts from comfort. Every Feldenkrais lesson begins within a range that does not provoke symptoms. There is no achievement of a target — no “get your heel further down.” That removes the thing that makes arthritic people dread exercise.
It redistributes load. If one part of a joint surface consistently takes the pressure, that is where it hurts. Changing the organisation of the whole limb can shift which surfaces are loaded, often reducing pain substantially without changing the joint at all.
It reduces parasitic effort. People with painful joints brace everything around them. That bracing costs energy and increases compression. Removing it is one of the fastest ways to feel better.
What it is not
It is not a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis or any inflammatory arthritis, and it does not affect disease activity. If you have an inflammatory condition, your medication is the primary intervention and this is an adjunct at most. Always discuss with your rheumatologist.
Which joints respond best
Clinical reports are most consistent for the knee, hip, spine, and the small joints of the hands. Hands are interesting: hand lessons involve very small, precise movements and people with hand osteoarthritis often report improved dexterity and less morning stiffness, though range may not change much.
Practical notes
- Lessons can be done seated or lying — useful when standing is painful.
- Work in the morning if that is when you are stiffest, and keep movements very small.
- Tell your practitioner which joints are affected and which movements hurt.
- Keep taking your medication and keep whatever exercise programme you have been given.
