Why it is usually not covered
Insurers generally reimburse services delivered by licensed, registered professions with recognised procedure codes. Feldenkrais practitioners are usually certified by a professional guild rather than licensed by a state or national regulator, and the method has no established procedure code in most systems. Without a licence and a code, there is nothing to bill.
Situations where it sometimes is covered
- When delivered by a licensed professional. A physiotherapist, occupational therapist or physician who is also a certified Feldenkrais practitioner may be able to bill it under their own licence. This is the most common route to reimbursement.
- Health savings or flexible spending accounts. In the US, HSAs and FSAs often cover it with a letter of medical necessity from a physician.
- Complementary therapy benefits. Some private health insurance policies include a complementary or alternative therapies allowance that covers somatic education.
- Specific conditions in specific systems. Coverage rules vary considerably by country and by insurer.
- Workers' compensation or rehabilitation budgets in some jurisdictions, where a case manager can authorise it.
What to actually do
1. Call your insurer and ask specifically about somatic education, movement re-education, or complementary therapy benefits — not “Feldenkrais”, which often is not in their system.
2. Ask whether a licensed provider is required, and whether your practitioner qualifies.
3. Ask your practitioner directly; experienced ones know exactly which insurers in their area reimburse and how to code it.
4. Get any pre-authorisation in writing.
Reducing the cost if it is not covered
Group Awareness Through Movement classes typically cost a fraction of private lessons. Practitioner training institutes often run low-cost public classes taught by trainees under supervision. Community and continuing-education programmes sometimes offer classes cheaply. And home practice with recorded lessons is genuinely effective for maintaining what private sessions produced.
