Online Feldenkrais Lessons

Feldenkrais Sleep · Updated 2026-09-24

The pandemic pushed a lot of Feldenkrais online, and an interesting split emerged: the verbal group format transferred remarkably well, and the hands-on format obviously did not. Knowing which is which will set your expectations correctly.

What transfers well online

Awareness Through Movement classes. This is a verbal format. The practitioner speaks, you move, and the entire medium is language and attention — which survives video almost perfectly. Many practitioners found their online classes worked nearly as well as in-person ones, and a great many continued offering them.

Individual verbal guidance. A practitioner watching you on video can see a surprising amount: which side you favour, where you brace, how you get up from the floor. They can then guide you verbally with real specificity.

What does not transfer

Functional Integration. It is hands-on by definition. There is no remote substitute, and anyone claiming otherwise is doing something else. Some practitioners developed approaches using self-touch guided verbally, which has some value, but it is a different thing.

What you need at home

  • A floor space with a mat, or a firm bed, or a sturdy chair.
  • A device with a camera positioned so the practitioner can see your whole body.
  • Enough bandwidth for continuous video — audio quality matters more than picture.
  • A warm room and layers, since you will be lying still.
  • A door you can close.

The advantages nobody expected

No travel, which makes weekly attendance realistic for people who live far from a practitioner. Access to excellent practitioners anywhere in the world. A recorded session you can repeat. And — reported frequently — less self-consciousness in your own home, which for some people improves the quality of attention.

The real disadvantages

The practitioner cannot feel your tissue tone or move you, which removes their finest diagnostic instrument. Technical problems interrupt attention, which is the whole medium. And some people find it harder to settle at home, with the washing machine audible and the door potentially opening.

How to choose

For general improvement, maintenance, or getting started: online group classes are excellent value and genuinely effective. For a specific, individual problem — particularly pain, injury or a neurological condition — a few in-person private sessions are worth arranging, even occasionally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are online classes as effective?

For ATM, close to it. The format is verbal and attention-based, which survives video well.

Can I have Functional Integration online?

No — it is hands-on by definition. What is offered remotely is verbal guidance, which is valuable but different.

What equipment do I need?

A mat or bed, a device with a camera that can see your whole body, and decent audio.

Is it cheaper?

Usually somewhat, since practitioners have lower overheads. Group online classes are often the cheapest way to do the method at all.

How do I find good online classes?

Ask national Feldenkrais organisations for practitioners offering online classes, and look for someone whose schedule you can actually attend consistently.

Can I do it if I have limited mobility?

Yes — tell the practitioner and lessons can be adapted to a chair or bed.
