White Noise for Sleep

Feldenkrais Sleep · Updated 2026-09-24

White noise is not a sleep aid in the sedative sense. It is a masker: it raises the background level so that sudden sounds — a door, a neighbour, traffic — no longer stand out enough to wake you. That makes it genuinely useful in some situations and almost pointless in others.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does white noise actually improve sleep?
It helps mainly by masking sudden sounds that would otherwise wake you. In a quiet room it does little.
What volume should it be?
Low — around 50 dB or quieter, roughly the level of a soft shower. Place the speaker away from the bed.
Is it safe to use every night?
Yes, at low volume with the source away from your head. Avoid in-ear headphones overnight.
Pink or white noise — which is better?
Pink noise is more pleasant for most people and masks low-frequency traffic well. There is no strong evidence that one is more effective.
